Robert R. Lazar Middle School Invited to State Science Olympiad

The Science Olympiad team of Robert R. Lazar Middle School scored the top spot in two competitions at the New Jersey Science Olympiad Regional Competition held on Thursday, January 15, 2015. The Division B team also placed in the top five in four other categories, which helped earn Lazar an invitation to the State Science Olympiad Competition on Tuesday, March 10 at Middlesex County College.

Lazar’s Sang Lee and Rahul Menon won 1st place in two categories. The two young scientists earned the number one spots in “Anatomy & Physiology” as well as in “Simple Machines.”

In “Anatomy & Physiology,” teams were tested on their knowledge of anatomy and health concepts including cardiovascular, integumentary and immune systems. The competitive tasks for “Simple Machines” required students to perform activities and answer questions related to simple machines.

In the “Write It Do It” competition, Lazar scientists, Venkat Gokaraju and Sindujah Sivakumar, took 3rd place. A technical writing competition, “Write It Do It” required students to write a description of a contraption, then other students attempted to recreate the contraption using only the written description.

Additionally, Sang Lee, Sai Pamula, and Alex Park won 5th place in “Experimental Design,” Agrim Gupta and Jeena Kataria earned 5th place in “Wheeled Vehicle,” and Alex Park and Lorrin Stone achieved 5th place in “Robo Cross.”

Overall the Lazar Science Olympiad team placed 5th in the New Jersey Science Olympiad Regional Competition. This placement secured the team’s invitation to the State Competition on Tuesday, March 10 at Middlesex County College. The Lazar Science Olympiad team is coached by science teachers, Kathy Ernst, Karin Simeone, and Cheryl Zanone.
