First and foremost, begin to gather estimates from moving companies. You should do this whether you are hiring movers, or renting a truck and moving yourself. Make a budget, and attempt to stick to it.
If you are moving away from your local community make sure that you have your medical and dental records. Likewise, check that you have all your current legal and financial records available to you. If you have kids and pets, arrange to have their school and veterinarian records transferred, as well.

It’s never too early to begin using up food and cleaning items that you either can’t or don’t want to move. Begin to purge your home. Separate items into “keep”, “donate” and “throw out” categories. If you have time and weather permitting plan a garage sale. Online community garage sales are gaining popularity, Facebook is a good resource to check out your area and see if a group such as this exists. Remember; always be mindful of giving out your address to a stranger. If possible, always meet in a centralized location for sale and exchange of items.
Make sure that you notify your utility providers at both your current and new location of your move date. File a change of address with the post office; they will hold your mail at your new location for up to 30 days. Most of these services will allow you to request your service changes online through their websites. The Ultimate Moving Checklist gives you a comprehensive list of other entities that you will need to notify of your new address close to your moving date.
Don’t forget to reserve your move with your movers or truck rental facility; this should be done at 4 weeks prior to the day you plan on moving.
At this point, you’ll want to order your moving supplies, if you are doing any of your own packing. Make sure you have a sufficient amount of boxes, packing material, and tape. It is wise to devise a system to help indicate which room a box goes into so that your moves can place them exactly where you want upon arrival.
Moving is an adventure to say the least! Being well-prepared will make it more enjoyable and a memorable experience for you and your family!
