Animals Displaced After Hurricane Ian Find Shelter In Morristown

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, more than 100 shelter pets from Florida have been airlifted to Morristown.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — Approximately 100 cats and dogs from Florida are now at shelters in and around Morris County following an emergency rescue flight out of Fort Lauderdale.

The nearly 100 cats and dogs were flown from South Florida to Morristown after their shelters on the southwest Florida coast were left unable to fully operate due to damage and staff shortages caused by Hurricane Ian.

This life-saving airlift was done in order to make room for the anticipated influx of surrendered and homeless pets that will arrive at shelters as a result of the storm, as well as shelter pets from Naples and Fort Myers, two of Florida's hardest hit areas.

The displaced animals were taken in by St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in Madison, the Liberty Humane Society and the Pennsylvania SPCA.

The dogs and cats will be medically evaluated before being placed for adoption at those shelters, officials said.

St. Hubert's Madison location, 575 Woodland Ave., is open for adoptions daily from 1:30 to 6 p.m.

Fosters are also desperately needed at the shelter. Fostering is an excellent way to provide an animal with a temporary reprieve from the shelter until they find a permanent home. "It’s rewarding and fun too," Diane Ashton, director of communications said.

Anyone interested in adopting a shelter animal can view all available animals on St. Hubert's website.
