Dead Body In Morris Co. Lake Identified, Investigation Still Underway

The 33-year-old victim was "unresponsive" when first responders pulled her out.

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — The woman who was found dead in a Denville lake on Sunday has been identified by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.

Alexis Velez, 33, of Mount Arlington, was spotted by nearby swimmers on Sunday just before 6 p.m., appearing unresponsive in Cedar Lake's waters.

Officials confirmed that Velez was swimming before she was found unresponsive, indicating she'd possibly drowned.

Authorities said that police and rescue officials pulled Velez out of the water and took her to a local hospital for treatment. She was pronounced dead at the hospital, officials said.

Officials continued to note that no signs of foul play are suspected.

Meghan Knab, a spokesperson for the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, said that a post-mortem examination has yet to be conducted by the Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office.
