Hazardous Weather, Flood Watch Issued In Morris County

Officials issued a hazardous weather warning for all of Morris County as the storms hit the area again on Tuesday.

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — More severe weather and heavy rain are expected in the Morris County region on Tuesday, as forecasters have extended the hazardous weather outlook and flood watch.

Tuesday is expected to bring 1 to 3 inches of rain to the region, with showers and thunderstorms developing in the afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service, flooding is possible throughout the county, particularly in urban and low-drainage areas, as well as near vulnerable small creeks and streams.

A flood warning is currently in effect for the Rockaway River at Boonton Below Reservoir. Flooding occurs on Vail Road in Montville at six feet, according to the weather service, and the river is expected to rise above flood stage late this morning to a crest of about 5.9 feet this evening.

Across the county, scattered showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain are expected this afternoon and evening.

On Monday, some areas in Morris County were slammed with more than five inches of rain, soaking the ground. Randolph received the highest rain totals, with 5.41 inches of rain falling throughout Monday's storms.

Here’s the latest forecast around Morris County, per the National Weather Service:

  • Tuesday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain. The chance of precipitation is 90 percent.
  • Tuesday night: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 11 p.m. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain. Patchy fog between 10 p.m. and midnight.
  • Wednesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 3 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with southwest winds of 3 to 8 mph. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent.
  • Wednesday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 9 p.m., then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. The chance of precipitation is 80 percent.
  • Thursday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m.
