Morristown Joins Relief Efforts For Ecuador Earthquake Survivors

Drop-off locations named; more than 600 pronounced dead one week after 7.8-magnitude quake.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – After a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Ecuador last week, efforts have grown to help relief efforts, including locally in Morristown.

The town of Morristown announced Monday afternoon it is assisting with collecting donations to help with relief efforts that can be dropped off at St. Margaret’s Church on Sussex Avenue, Monday through Friday, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 2 to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Morristown Town Hall will also be available for drop-offs. See Maria on the first floor in the municipal court Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Items needed include:

  • Nonperishables (canned food, rice, sugar, dried pasta)
  • Powdered milk
  • Hygiene products (toothpaste, body soap)
  • Sanitary towels
  • Diapers
  • Baby formula
  • Cotton balls
  • Alcohol
  • Repellent
  • Gauze
  • Gloves
  • Sunscreen
  • Battery operated radios
  • Flashlights
  • Candles
  • Plastic plates
  • Cups and cutlery
  • Towels
  • Batteries
  • Industrial size garbage bags
  • Nonperishable snacks (protein bars, dried fruits and nuts)

  • Toys for young children (crayons, coloring books, construction paper)

  • Mosquito nets

According to bbc.com, the latest death toll reached a staggering 646 people with another 130 missing. The quake struck on April 16 and some 27 countries have responded with rescue teams and relief efforts.
