Several Historic 4th Of July Events In Morristown For 2019

MORRISTOWN, NJ — The night of July 4th is usually reserved for barbecues and fireworks celebrations— but what about some history in the morning? The Morristown National Historical Park, the nation’s first historical park, and the Morris County Tourism Bureau have teamed up to provide a slate of historic and patriotic activities in and around Morristown for Fouth of July 2019 (and they wrap up in time to check out the fireworks at night).

The following free festivities are on the schedule for this year, Any questions can be directed to the tourism bureau at morristourism.org or call 973-631-5151.

  • 10 a.m.: The Hanover Township Landmark Commission will give a free tour of its 1718 Burying Yard located on Route 10 East, Whippany. This one-hour tour will highlight the earliest settlers of Morris County. Please pre-register by calling 973-631-5151 or signing up at info@morristourism.org.
  • 11:15 a.m.: Beginning at the Ford Mansion in Morristown, fall in with costumed Revolutionary War soldiers and march to the Morristown Green.
  • 11:30 a.m.: The Loose Cannons singing group will be perform a wide selection of music at the Morristown Green.
  • 12 Noon: On the Morristown Green, costumed interpreters will read the Declaration of Independence, an annual Morris County tradition. Audience participation is encouraged. There will be a musket salute, followed by free guided walking tours of the Presbyterian Church’s newly restored sanctuary and its Colonial-era graveyard, est. 1733. In case of rain, the reading of the Declaration will move indoors to the Presbyterian Church on the Green, 57 East Park Place.
  • 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.: Join the Morris County Historical Society at Acorn Hall in Morristown for a hike along Patriots’ Path to the archaeological site of New Jersey’s Revolutionary War Powder Mill along the Whippany River. Learn about the history of the Powder Mill, the significant role it played locally during the Revolutionary War, and plans for its future. Tours are scheduled, for 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, starting at Acorn Hall, 68 Lafayette Avenue, Morristown.
  • 1:30 p.m.: There will be an organ music concert with Josh Stafford in the sanctuary of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on South Street and at Miller Road in Morristown.

Friday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 87. Southeast wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 9pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 9pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 84.
