A Milestone in African-American Studies, Budget Hearings Begin and a Dinosaur Visit Too

The T-Rex is coming to Newark! This Tuesday, , Bears mascot Rupert will be joined by a 15-foot animated dinosaur for the pre-game festivities before the home team plays the Kansas City T-Bones. The Jurassic-inspired fun begins at 6 pm; game time is 6:35 pm.
The Newark Municipal Council this week begins meeting with the heads of various city departments to discuss their individual budgets. The hearings are part of the review process for the overall $592 million budget On Tuesday at 5 pm at city hall, the council will review the budget for the law department; water and sewer will be reviewed at 6. Other public hearings have been scheduled throughout the rest of the month.
The public’s invited to come help celebrate a milestone in the study of African-American history Wednesday, when a reception will be held from 5:30 to 8:00 pm at the , 49 Washington St., honoring the 10th anniversary of so-called Amistad legislation requiring the teaching of African-American history year-round. is hosting an open house the Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm at the 346 Mt. Prospect Ave. The event, being held in the predominantly Latino North Ward, will focus on ECC offerings that will be available at the center’s Newark Business Training Institute on Roseville Avenue. Courses to be discussed include English as a Second Language as well as college-level and development courses, along with non-credit courses. Visitors will also learn about North Ward Center offerings, including its free public preschool, Casa Israel Adult Medical Day Care Center and the its Blue Ribbon charter school.
