A Parade and Street Fair, Semi-Pro Football and an Important Meeting

The New Community Corporation holds its 29th annual Advocacy Parade  and Family Festival this Saturday, Sept. 15. The parade -- featuring grand marshal Brenda Blackmon, co-anchor of My9 TV’s 10 o’clock news --  begins at noon at South Orange and Littleton avenues, heads east on South Orange Avenue to Jones Street and then to 14th Avenue. The parade will be followed by a street festival at Hayes and Bedford streets (between 14th and 15th avenues) where there will be musical entertainment provided by DJ Qua, dance workshops, health screenings, a food court and more. 

The Valerie Fund Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disoriders at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is hosting events in recognition of Sickle Cell Awareness Month. There’ll be a woman’s health event tonight, Sept. 10, at Luz Spa, 116 Madison St., at 5 pm, as well as support group sessions being held throughout the month. The professional -- and semi-professional -- football seasons are underway! The New Jersey Longhorns play their second game of the 2012 campaign Sept. 15 at 7 pm at Nat Turner Park, 246 18th Ave. The Longhorns square off against their rivals from across the river, the New York Syn. 
 
The Newark Municipal Council has scheduled a special meeting to vote on an ordinance that would prohibit the creation of an authority to oversee the city’s water and sewer departments. The ordinance made it onto the agenda after a citizens group collected more than 5,000 signatures. The meeting during which members of the public will have the chance to be heard, will be held Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 6 pm.
