The Newark Municipal Council will vote Wednesday on an ordinance that would require most employers based in the city to offer their workers sick time -- and an advocacy group plans to hold a unique rally in support of the measure.
Shortly before the council meeting, at 5:45 pm, supporters will join “Germie” (pictured) at a rally on the steps of city hall, 920 Broad St. Should officials approve the measure Wednesday -- which has already passed on first reading -- Newark will become the second city in the state, after Jersey City, to require businesses and public-sector employers to offer sick time for their workers.
Earlier on Wednesday, city officials will welcome the 43rd class from the Newark Fire Academy into the ranks. The ceremony will be held at the Chestnut Street firehouse, and will also serve as an occasion to highlight the completion of major renovations at the nearly 100-year-old East Ward house.
