Another Pedestrian Killed Along McCarter Highway

No charges filed in accident Sunday

Authorities Monday were still trying to identify a woman who was struck and killed by a motorist Sunday night, said Kathy Carter, a spokeswoman with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The woman was hit by a van as she tried to cross McCarter Highway at Emmet Street around 7:30 pm. She was taken to University Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after 8 pm. No charges have been filed against the driver, who remained at the scene of the accident, Carter said.

This is the second fatal motor-vehicle accident involving a pedestrian along the busy thoroughfare in less than a month. On Feb. 12, while trying to cross McCarter at E. Kinney Street, about a half-mile from the scene of Sunday’s accident. The driver in that incident also remained on scene and no charges were filed.
