Arrests Made in Multiple Killings and a Powerful Winter Storm Top Local News

The week's top news on Newark Patch.

Two-thousand thirteen ended on a violent note in Newark, where a man was shot and a woman seriously wounded during a domestic incident on New Year’s Eve, bringing the city’s annual murder total to more than 100.

The first major storm of the year blew through the area, sending temperatures plummeting into the single digits and burying Newark under nearly 9 inches of snow. City hall and the public schools were closed Friday.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office announced the arrests of four people, and of charges being brought against a fifth, for a series of murders in the last few weeks of December. Among the victims were five people -- three in Irvington and two Newark teenagers -- who were killed on Christmas.
