Authorities Catch Bank Robbery Suspect

Three Banks Hit During Brief Spree Last Month

A city man suspected in a pair of recent bank robberies was arrested Wednesday wearing the same clothing he’d worn during one of the heist attempts, the US Attorney’s Office announced today.

Clifton Mosley, 44, appeared before US Magistrate Judge Cathy L. Waldor yesterday in Newark after being charged in two bank robberies and an attempted robbery all occurring in a two-week span last month.

According to a copy of the complaint provided by the US Attorney, Mosley entered the TD Bank branch at 1180 Raymond Blvd. around 11:30 am on Feb. 11, then passed a teller a handwritten note threatening to shoot if Mosley was not given cash. He left the bank with $2,469.

Less than a week later, around 1 pm on Feb. 17, Mosley entered another TD Bank branch, at 105-109 Mulberry St., and again handed a note to a teller demanding cash. Mosley was given $590 in cash that also contained a red dye pack. Investigators later recovered a damaged dye pack and stained bank notes near 217 Market St.

Mosley entered a third bank, a PNC branch at 565 Main St. in East Orange, around 5:44 pm on Feb. 23. This time, authorities said the note he handed to a teller warned not to include a dye pack. When the teller briefly left the window to go to another window, however, Mosley fled.

He was arrested about 8 am Wednesday after an investigation by the FBI and the Newark Police Department. At the time of his arrest, he was wearing a vest and a sweatshirt jacket that he was also seen wearing on surveillance video from the Feb. 23 robbery, the US Attorney’s Office said. Earlier, at the home of a former girlfriend, investigators found clothing stained with red dye similar to that inserted in the cash bundle allegedly given to Mosley during the Feb. 17 robbery.

Mosley faces 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each of three incidents, all of which were captured on video surveillance cameras, the US Attorney’s Office said.

Anyone with information pertaining to the case is urged to call the Newark office of the FBI at 973-792-3000.
