
This week in Newark, South Ward Councilman and mayoral candidate Ras Baraka is hosting a community meeting to discuss the creation of a ward crime watch in response to ongoing street violence, especially on Bergen Street and Lyons, Chancellor and Avon avenues. Law enforcement officials, including Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura, Sheilah Coley, chief of the Newark Police Department, and Samuel DeMaio, the department director, have all been asked to attend.
The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 24 at 6 pm and will be held in the auditorium of Weequahic High School, 279 Chancellor Ave. Organizers are asking the public to spread the word among other ward residents.
Also, Monday is the 43rd-annual Earth Day celebration, a day to acknowledge and celebrate efforts to preserve the environment. Here in Newark, Mayor Cory Booker will be marking the occasion with students from Bragaw Avenue School, who will be cleaning up and beautifying the area around the school. In addition, employees of College Hunks Hauling Junk will be volunteering to clean up lots throughout the city, including 217 Fairmount Avenue (8:30am), South Orange Avenue and Gladstone (10am), 16th and 9th avenues (8:30 am), 364 Grove St. (10 am) and at Dassing and Speedway (noon).
Avon, the cosmetics company, is recruiting representatives in Newark this week. From 11 am to 6 pm at the Pueblo Supermarket, 880 Mt. Prospect Ave., company personnel will be taking part in Avon’s “Say Yes to Beauty Tour.” “Avon offers the opportunity for women to earn supplemental income alongside their current job, or to start a full-time business with an unlimited earnings potential based upon the amount of time one puts into their business.
