Beth Israel Hosting Several Events During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBIMC) is highlighting all the programs and services it has available to enhance breast health.
 
·        On Saturday, Oct. 27, the Annual Breast Cancer Screening will be held at the Frederick B. Cohen, MD, ComprehensiveCancer & Blood Disorders Center, Newark, from 8am to  noon. Attendees will receive instructions on breast health and Breast Self Examination, clinical breast examinations from a physician and appointments for free mammograms. To register, call 973-926-3295.
 
·        NBIMC  received a grant from The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey (HFNJ) for the purchase of a Digital Mammography Unit to complete an updated Mammography Suite that houses a second unit, making the center 100 percent digital. The Digital Unit lowers radiation dose, improves patient comfort with less compression of the breast required for image quality, provides higher contrast images to minimize false positives and reduces the need for surgical biopsies. The E.J. Grassmann Trust gave funds to purchase a mammotome, a state-of-the-art instrument for breast biopsy. ·        NBIMC offers an exercise program, Recovery Fitness, for women recovering from breast and other types of cancers.  This program is funded by the Jewish Women’s Foundation of New Jersey and Eisai, Inc.  A cancer exercise specialist conducts exercise classes at NBIMC on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 am to noon.   For more information, call 973-926-7155.

·        Susan G. Komen for the Cure North Jersey Affiliate funds The Beautiful You Program, which helps uninsured and underinsured Essex County women with breast cancer to procure wigs, bras, breast prostheses and lymphedema garments. Also, a breast cancer social worker is funded by a grant from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure North Jersey Affiliate and provides psychosocial support services. For information, call 973-926-7976.
 
·        NBIMC is the recipient of a grant from the Avon Foundation which has expanded the Breast Cancer Patient Navigation Program for the medically underserved community. The Nurse Navigator Program addresses barriers to care from diagnosis to treatment and following post-treatment regimens. For more information, call (973) 926-2673.
