The highest-ranking member of the Brick City set of the Bloods street gang was sentenced today to 14 years in jail on charges he distributed drugs and ordered an attack on another gang member who was cooperating with a racketeering investigation, the US Attorney’s Office in Newark announced.
Altariq Gumbs, 34, who also went by the aliases “Reek,” “Jersey,” “Sankofa” and “Killer Reek,” had previously pleaded guilty of conspiracy to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.
Gumbs, the Double Original Gangster, or “OOG,” of the Brick City Brims, a subset of the Fruit Town Brims (“FTB”) set of the Bloods, admitted that he led the gang from an Arizona prison, directing gang members in Newark and Jersey City from October through December 2008 to sell heroin. The gang members then wired the money to Gumbs or his associates, with funds sometimes landing in a commissary account at the Arizona prison.
Gumbs also admitted that he was responsible for conspiring to bribe “M.J,” a member of the Paterson FTB, with continued membership in the gang to compel her to recant a statement that she made to Paterson police regarding a homicide. As part of the conspiracy, Gumbs also ordered “M.J.,” to be physically assaulted for speaking with law enforcement, which was a violation of the gang’s rules.
