Booker to Discuss Walkable Streets Program Thursday
In online chat, mayor will talk about initiatives for making roads more accessible to non-motorists

Mayor Cory Booker will join representatives from AARP, the American Association of Retired Persons, for a live “TeleTown Hall/Web” event this Thursday, Sept. 27 at 10 am to discuss making Newark safer for pedestrians, with a focus on its “complete streets” policy. Enacted just days ago, the policy is designed to establish Newark as a model for walkable streets and a more livable community.
The program, which went into effect following Newark Municipal Council approval earlier this month, is designed to make the city’s streets more accessible to pedestrians, bicyclists, the elderly and the handicapped. The city has already installed state-of-the art bike lanes at some major thoroughfares and has undertaken other measures to make Newark more accessible to non-motorists,
The event will feature discussion on how other communities across the state are lining up to adopt similar policies that are intended to make communities safer for bicyclists, public transportation passengers, and for those who simply choose to walk. Those listening in will also learn about ways in which they may be able to work to encourage similar changes within their own communities.
The event can be accessed at 10 am Sept. 27 by visiting www.livestream.com/AARPNJ or by clicking here.
