Brothers Arrested in Newark Teen's Shooting

Two East Orange brothers were arrested in the shooting of a Newark teen Sunday at the intersection of Frelinghuysen Avenue and Empire Street, authorities said.

Members of Newark Police Department's Fugitive Apprenhension Team arrested Isaiah Swinton, 21, and Calvin Swinton, 20, and charged them with the teen’s shooting Sunday.

The 17-year-old victim, who sustained non-life threatening wounds to the leg, arm and hand, was a passenger in a car with the two suspects when they forced him from the car and shot him multiple times before fleeing.

After an investigation, police identified the suspects and arrested Isaiah Swinton on aggravated assault and conspiracy charges when they found him at 34 N. 18th St. in East Orange at 8 a.m. Wednesday. Newark police arrested Calvin Swinton at 89 Eaton Pl. in East Orange.

Police said Calvin Swinton will be charged with additional weapons charges because at the time of his arrest, he allegedly tossed two weapons from a window. Additional weapons charges may be filed against both men, police said.

"This arrest is another fine example of the positive results achieved from our Major Crimes Unit and Fugitive Apprehension Section that work together seamlessly to investigate incidents of violent crime and arrest those responsible," said Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio. "Our investigators from both units routinely do an excellent job and I applaud them for their efforts in arresting both suspects within a couple days of the incident."
