Captain Hospitalized With Face Burns After Newark House Fire

The captain's injuries were not serious, all residents were safely evacuated and the fire was extinguished within an hour, officials said.

NEWARK, NJ — A fire captain was hospitalized after suffering injuries during a fire at a Newark residential building Wednesday evening, Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O'Hara said.

The firefighter suffered burns to his face and was transported to Saint Barnabas Medical Center for treatment, O'Hara said. No other injuries were reported.

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire in the basement of 473 North 9th Street at approximately 6:23 p.m., O'Hara said, and additional engines and an additional ladder assisted in controlling it.

The fire was considered under control at 7:15 p.m., O'Hara said. Its cause and origin are under investigation by the Newark Department of Public Safety's Arson Unit.

"I am very grateful that the fire captain’s injuries are not serious and that all residents have been safely evacuated," O’Hara said. "I commend the Newark firefighters who worked tirelessly to put this fire under control."
