Children Hospitalized Following School Bus Accident in Newark Friday

Witnesses said vehicle appeared to have mechanical problems

Initial reports indicate no one was seriously injured when a school bus hopped a curb near a North Ward car wash Friday.

Shortly after 1 pm, the vehicle was traveling east on 2nd Avenue when it came to the corner of 3rd Street and attempted to make a left turn. Instead, the vehicle continued straight, surmounting the curb.

Witnesses who live on 2nd Avenue reported hearing a "boom" and saw several ambulances immediately arriving to attend to the frightened children. A 2nd Avenue resident, Angel Cintron, who witnessed the immediate afermath of the accident, said it appeared to be caused by a mechanical problem with the bus.
