'Children' Slate Wins School Board Election

Vote tally not completed until Wednesday

The three candidates of The Children First Team have all won seats on the Newark School Advisory Board, according to a complete but preliminary tally of votes released Wednesday by the Essex County Clerk’s Office.

Results from more than 96 percent of voting districts were released on election night yesterday, but the remainder were not tallied until this morning, according to Essex County Clerk Chris Durkin.

Poll workers in a handful of districts failed to turn in electronic cartridges from voting machines last night but did turn in paper tallies from the machines, Durkin said. The vote counts on the cartridges and on paper are identical, he also said.

Those paper tallies were counted today and added to the lead already held by Khalil Rashidi, Ariagna Perello and Rashon Hasan as of last night. They received a total of 3,205, 2,988 and 2,263 votes, respectively. Philip Seelinger received the next-highest tally, 1,905 votes, Sheila Montague got 1,182 and rounding out the field was Gerrell Elliott with 566.

There were also 63 provisional ballots that had yet be incorporated into the final totals.

The members of the Children First Team were each elected to three-year terms.
