City Man Charged with Carjackings Tuesday

McLendon used handgun to out people from parked cars, authorities allege

A 19-year-old city man was charged Tuesday with committing two carjackings in June, the US Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

Authorities said on June 6 Jahleel McLendon pulled a gun on the occupant of a Chrysler 300 and took the vehicle. Later that day he led police on a chase, crashing into two utility poles that came down onto the pursuing police car. McLendon then escaped on foot.

On June 22, McLendon allegedly approached another parked, occupied vehicle, a Chevy Impala, ordering the person out at gunpoint. A few hours after this carjacking, patrolling officers again spotted the stolen car and once again chased McLendon, this time capturing him as he fled on foot.

McLendon allegedly threw down a silver handgun as he was being chased, police also said.

He faces carjacking, firearms and other charges, the most severe of which carry a sentence of life in prison. McLendon also faces maximum combined fines of up to $1 million.
