City Offering Lifegaurd Training
Graduates of program often hired at city pools for summer season

The city of Newark is offering a six-day lifeguard training course from May 6 through May 11. The course will be held at the Ironbound Aquatic Center, 226 Rome St. The course is available only to Newark residents aged 15 and older.
Early registration for the classes is strongly advised. A $50 fee is due the first day of the course. Participants must pre-register by calling 973-733-6454 or 973-715-2856.
The class schedule is as follows: May 6, 5 to 9 pm; May 7, 4 to 9 pm; May 8, 5 to 9 pm; May 9, 5 to 9 pm; May 10, 4 to 9 pm; and May 11, 9 am to 5 pm.
All participants must bring two proofs of Newark residency when they sign up, and must attend, be on time, and participate in all class sessions. Participants must also demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skills and pass all exams with a minimum grade of 80 percent.
The course will require participants to swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing, using the front crawl, breast stroke, or a combination of both. Participants must also tread water for two minutes, complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds, and surface dive, feet or head first to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. All attendees must bring swimwear, swim cap, and towel to all classes.
While no jobs are guaranteed for persons who take the class, the Division of Recreation & Cultural Affairs, and other agencies that require lifeguards often hire graduates from these classes during the summer season.
