Construction At Newark Skyscraper Comes To Standstill: Report

A lawsuit claiming "safety concerns" and repeated union protests are adding to the speculation about the future of Halo, a report says.

NEWARK, NJ — Progress on a highly hyped skyscraper in Newark has apparently hit a standstill, with a lawsuit claiming “safety concerns” and repeated union protests adding to the speculation about its future, a report says.

Work has completely stopped in recent weeks at Halo, a three-tower, 1,075 apartment residential complex at 289-301 Washington Street, Jersey Digs reported on Wednesday.

A lawsuit filed in January by Dobco against Hudson Meridian Construction and Acier Holdings claims that “a series of safety concerns” regarding Halo were impacting their nearby work at the Essex County Family Courthouse. Read the full article here.

Jersey Digs isn’t the only one to notice a slowdown in progress at Halo.

“I haven't noticed any additional floors being glassed in the last few weeks,” a commenter posted on a Reddit thread in April.

As of Wednesday, a website for the development stated that it is “coming soon” in the winter of 2024, with rents starting at $2,100. The first of the three towers topped out in February.

Acier Holdings nailed down $90 million in financing to build Phase 1 of the project in 2022, which covered the construction of 297 units on 38 stories, as well as a five-story parking garage, The Real Deal reported.
