Firefighters Rescue Occupants from Burning Home Monday
One firefighter hurt in second blaze along Summer Avenue since previous night
A firefighter was injured Monday morning at a house fire occurring a block away from another fire that ripped through two homes Sunday night.
Firefighters responded around 9 am to a fire at a multifamily dwelling in the 200 block of Summer Avenue, said Newark Fire Chief John Centanni. The two-alarm blaze was brought under control by 9:36 am.
Firefighters helped a number of residents out of the three-story dwelling, with some residents sustaining minor injuries, Centanni said.
Firefighters also performed a difficult ground ladder rescue of a man who appeared in a third-floor window of the home when firefighters arrived, Centanni added.
“That’s a tough operation. Our members did a good job with that,” he said.
One firefighter was in the hospital Monday to determine the extent of his injuries, Centanni also said. His precise condition was not immediately known.
Centanni said the fire may have started in the second floor of the residence but he would not know for sure until an investigation had been completed. The cause of the fire was still unknown Monday morning.
A little more than 12 hours earlier, fire broke out at 323 and 325 Summer Ave., one block north of Monday’s fire.
