Free Tax Preparation Service Available to Newark Residents
VITA program helped hundreds of working families get millions in refunds last year
The Ironbound Community Corp.is offering free free tax preparation services to filers who make $51,000 a year or less.
The nonprofit agency’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) service will be offered at the ICC Success Center, 29-31 Cortland St., Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 7 pm. Call 973-344-5949 for more information.
The service will also be offered at Investors Bank, 275 Chestnut St. (second floor), Monday to Thursday from 4 to 8 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. Call 973-465-0555 for more information.
Last year, the ICC assisted almost 800 families who received a total of $2 million in refunds, including $430,000 through state and federal Earned Income Tax Credit programs, which provide tax breaks for lower-income households. The EITC can be worth as much as $6,000 to a family.
To date, the program is funded by the IRS, New Jersey Citizens Action, Investors Bank and Sovereign Bank.
