Legendary Newark Artist's Funeral This Week

The week ahead on Newark Patch.

Coming up this week on Newark Patch, we’ll be checking in as Newarkers join others from the world of politics and the arts to say goodbye to Amiri Baraka, who died last week. The funeral for the legendary, Newark-based poet and activist will be held Saturday at Newark Symphony Hall at 10 am. Viewing will be held on Friday at Metropolitan Baptist Church from 4 to 9 pm.

Also this week, on Tuesday, the Newark Museum will host the induction ceremony for the latest round of honorees being admitted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. Among this year’s inductees are comedian Joe Piscopo, singers Whitney Houston and Dionne Warwick, and entrepreneur-philanthropist Ray Chambers.

Also on Tuesday state lawmakers in Trenton will challenge a controversial plan to reorganize Newark’s public schools, a plan which includes school closings. The lawmakers will instead be lobbying for an alternative in which a school cannot be closed without the approval of the city school advisory board, a body that now has limited authority in the state-run Newark school district.

State Sen. Ron Rice, Antoinette Baskerville-Richardson -- the president of the Newark Schools Advisory Board -- and other officials will present a petition opposing the so-called “One Newark” plan.
