Heating Shelter Hours Reduced Due to Burst Water Pipe

JFK Center to be open during normal hours until further notice, city officials said Saturday

A burst water pipe has forced city officials to restrict the hours of operation of the John F. Kennedy Recreation Center, which was being used as a round-the-clock heating shelter since the onset of frigid temperatures this week, the city announced in a statement Saturday.

The pipe burst due to low temperatures, forcing the reduction in hours to make repairs, city officials also said. The facility, located at 211 W. Kinney St. (entrance on the Howard Street side) will remain open as a warming center Tuesdays through Fridays from 9:30 am until 7:30 pm until further notice

The pool at the center will be closed completely until further notice but the pool at the Ironbound Aquatic Center, 226 Rome St., will be open to those with JFK Center permits. The Ironbound Aquatic Center is not being used as a heating shelter.
