A crying baby boy was found at a bus stop near the University of Medicine and Dentistry early this morning, the Newark Police Department said tonight.
Newark police responded at 5:50 am after receiving a report that an infant had been found in a laundry basket by a passerby, who alerted a UMDNJ officer. The officer rushed the child to the hospital’s Emergency Pediatric Unit for observation.
No other information about the baby was immediately available.
“I applaud the heroic citizen that alerted the authorities,” said Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio. “The action taken by this citizen ultimately saved the infant’s life.”
Newark police are investigating and urging anyone with information to call 877-NWK-TIPS (877-695-8477).
Like most other states in the country, New Jersey has a “Safe Haven” law, which permits a parent or someone chosen by the parent to surrender infants who are or appear to be younger than 30 days old at hospitals or police stations. The infants, however, must be brought directly to those facilities.
