Man Arrested After Attempting Rooftop Escape

Daniels faces weapons charges stemming from shooting

An Irvington man was arrested April 27 in connection with a shooting on Pennington Street, Newark police said.

Police responded to 157 Pennington St. around 6 pm on a report of shots fired. A witness provided a description of a suspect, later identified as Jonathan Daniels, 26, who was spotted shortly afterwards on Broad Street.

Police said Daniels initially fled from police by climbing onto, and then jumping off of, a Lincoln Park rooftop. He was arrested after what police said was a violent struggle.

Daniels, who police said was carrying a loaded 9-mm handgun, has been charged with resisting arrest, and weapons offenses. He was also wanted on outstanding warrants from Union and Irvington totalling $10,000.

A second suspect, who sustained gunshot wounds to each hand, cooperated with police and was treated at University Hospital.

Detectives are still investigating the original shooting incident at 157 Pennington St. as well as the circumstances surrounding the gunshot wounds to the second suspect.
