Man Arrested After Reportedly Entering Precinct with Handgun

Jones and woman were filling out missing persons report

A 20-year-old city man was arrested Monday after walking into a police station reeking of marijuana and carrying a concealed handgun, Newark police said.

Sadat Jones and a woman entered the 4th Precinct on 17th Street around 9 pm to fill out a missing persons report for the woman’s daughter. When officers approached Jones, he tried to run from the building but was quickly detained. He was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon after police said a .38-caliber handgun was found in the waistband of his pants.

"While I am shocked by the brazen actions of this individual to knowingly bring an illegal firearm into the precinct, I commend the officers on a job well done and I am pleased we were able to safely remove another firearm from our streets,” Police Director Samuel DeMaio said.
