Man Arrested Friday After Allegedly Firing Assault Weapon

No one is believed to have been hurt, officials said

A 21-year-old city man who police said fired a number rounds from an assault weapon Friday was arrested following a brief chase, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

The incident occurred around 1:15 pm near Chadwick Avenue and West Runyon Street, where detectives from the prosecutor’s office reportedly observed Sulaiman Hooper fire the weapon at a house. The detectives called for assistance from Newark police and the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, who found Hooper hiding in bushes nearby. The weapon was also recovered, the prosecutor’s office said.


A prosecutor’s office spokesman, Chief of Detectives Anthony Ambrose, said Friday it was not known why Hooper was firing at the house or how many shots were fired. There were no known injuries, Ambrose also said.

Hooper, who was taken into custody by sheriff’s officers, was charged with weapons offenses and may face other charges as the investigation unfolds.
