Man Charged in February Shooting Death

NPD, Prosecutor's Squad Nab Suspect this Morning

A 38-year-old city man was arrested today for shooting and killing another man after an argument last month, the Essex County Prsecutor’s Office and the Newark Police Department announced today.

Garret Bryant and Al-Kareem Dunell, a 33-year-old Irvington resident, became involved in a dispute around 9:30 pm Feb. 20 when Bryant allegedly shot Dunell. The victim, who was shot at 653 South 20th St., was taken to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:15 pm.

Members of the Prosecutor’s Office/Homicide Task Force btained a warrant for Bryant’s arrest yesterday and he was arrested today at approximately 6:30 am by members of the Newark Police Department and the task force at 74 Willoughby Ave.  Bail has been set at $500,000 by the Honorable Peter J. Vazquez, J.S.C. 

“I applaud the tireless efforts of the members of the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task force for their relentless pursuit of justice which culminated in the swift apprehension of a violent and dangerous criminal,” said Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio.
