A New Brunswick man was arrested Monday for allegedly attempting to board an international flight at Newark Liberty International Airport with razor blades hidden in his carry-on luggage, the US Attorney’s Office said in a statement.
Michael John Davidson, 41, paid more than $2,600 in cash for a one-way Lufthansa ticket to Dusseldorf, Germany, where he was to catch a connecting flight to Budapest, Hungary, the US Attorney’s Office said. Because of the circumstances of his ticket purchase, Davidson was subjected to additional screening but did not comply with screeners’ instructions, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday. Six razor blades were found following an X-ray inspection and a search, the complaint also states.
Judge Mark Falk in Newark federal court ordered Davidson detained and sent for a mental competency evaluation Tuesday.
If convicted, Davidson faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
