Newark Will Suspend Trash Pickup, Other City Services On New Year’s Day 2026

Here are some local updates to know for New Year's Day in Newark.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark will suspend its non-emergency municipal services on Thursday, Jan. 1 in observance of New Year’s Day 2026. Police, fire and other uniformed emergency services will be unaffected.

Here are some things to keep in mind for the holiday, city officials said:

PARKING/STREET SWEEPING – “Alternate side of the street parking and street sweeping will be suspended.”

TRASH/RECYCLING – “Curbside trash and recycling will not be collected in Zone A. Residents living in Zone A should hold their trash until Monday, January 5, and hold bottles and cans until Thursday, January 8. Residents must place their refuse at their curbs the evening before those days, and pick-ups will be made as regularly scheduled.”

CITY SERVICES – “The Department of Health and Community Wellness’s inspection services, transportation for seniors, and health clinic, will not operate on Thursday, January 1. In addition, the Bureau of Vital Statistics will be closed. Residents will not be able to apply for permits, birth certificates, name-change certificates, marriage licenses, nor pay water or tax bills at City Hall. The Medical Director and Department’s Division of Surveillance and Prevention will be on call for medical and public health emergencies.”

COURT – “The Municipal Court will also be closed on Thursday, January 1. However, a judge will be available to preside over bail hearings for defendants in custody. Residents can make payments on parking and traffic tickets through the website www.njmcdirect.com. To utilize this website, residents will need their summons number, including the prefix, and the City of Newark’s court code, which is 0714.”
