More Trees, Please: Newark Schools Get $250K Grant For Greenery

The Newark Public School District has been awarded a $250,000 grant to plant trees at 10 local schools.

NEWARK, NJ — The Newark Public School District has been awarded a $250,000 grant to plant trees at 10 local schools.

According to the Newark Board of Education, the Trees for Schools Grant will cover costs related to planning, site preparation, tree purchases, planting, watering, monitoring and maintenance over a three-year period.

Tree planting is scheduled to begin in Spring 2026.

Newark was among 40 grant recipients across the state. Award amounts ranged from $10,000 to $250,000.

The 10 Newark schools that were selected for funds are: Michelle Obama Elementary School, Chancellor Avenue School, Speedway Avenue Elementary School, Nelson Mandela Elementary School, Luis Munoz Marin Elementary School, Peshine Avenue, Elementary School, First Avenue Elementary School, South Street Elementary School, New Jersey Regional Day School, and Technology High School.

The new trees will provide greenery and increase shade coverage in one of the hottest “urban heat islands” in New Jersey, district administrators said.

“Our schools are not just centers of learning they are anchors in our neighborhoods,” Newark Board of Education President Hasani Council said.

“This initiative will enhance the daily experiences of students, staff, and community members alike, while helping build a more sustainable Newark,” Council said.

The grant is being provided by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection in partnership with Sustainable Jersey and The College of New Jersey.
