Muslim Community Mourns For Beloved Newark Imam, Mustafa El-Amin
The "world-renowned scholar, teacher and leader" was also an educator and author.
ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — The Muslim community is mourning for a beloved local imam in Essex County in the wake of his passing this week: Mustafa El-Amin.
El-Amin died on Oct. 25 at the age of 67. A Janazah service was held on Tuesday.
Born in Newark, El-Amin served as the imam of Masjid Ibrahim Islamic Teaching and Development Center in the Weequahic section of the city for more than 22 years. His professional career also included service with the Newark Board of Education central office and teaching at Camden Street School and Central High School, as well as authoring nine books on Al-Islam and Freemasonry. He was honored with induction in the Weequahic Hall of Fame.

Community activist and local history teacher Bashir Muhammad Ptah Akinyele said El-Amin was a “world-renowned scholar, teacher and leader.”
“His efforts helped to make Newark home to one of the largest populations of Muslims in America,” Akinyele said.
