Newark Beth Israel Honored for Cardiology Program

Hospital recognized by prestigious list for clinical accolades, quality care and contributions to the field of cardiology.

Newark Beth Israel (NBI) Medical Center was recently named to a prestigious list of “70 Hospitals with Great Cardiology Programs,” one of two hospitals recognized in the state. 

According to “Becker’s Hospital Review,” the hospital was selected based on clinical accolades, quality care and contributions to the field of cardiology. 

“Becker’s Hospital Review” features up-to-date business and legal news and analysis relating to hospitals and health systems.

The hospitals were recognized for their excellence in cardiology by healthcare rating resources, including “U.S. News & World Report,” HealthGrades, Thomson Reuters, the American Heart Association, the American Stroke Association and the American Nurses Credentialing Center. 

The Barnabas Health Heart Center at the hospital has received a variety of awards and accreditations this year.

“The Becker’s designation further confirms our role as a leader in cardiovascular care,” said Dr. John A. Brennan, executive director of the hospital and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey. 

“The cardiac program at NBI, part of Barnabas Health Heart Centers, continues to bring innovative, pioneering clinical excellence to patients in this region, by a steller team of cardiac surgeons,” Brennan added. 

Honors the hospital has achieved include: 

♦ Newark Beth Israel Medical Center was named one of the nation’s top 50 hospitals for specialty care in cardiology and heart surgery for the third consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report. 

♦ Newark Beth Israel and all the Barnabas Heart Centers achieved Joint Commission Disease-Specific Care Certification for Acute Coronary Syndrome. This Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval recognizes the hospitals’ expertise in caring for patients, before, during and after a cardiac event from coordinating pre-hospital care with EMS through cardiac rehabilitation.

♦ The Heart Failure Treatment and Transplant Program is ranked as the fifth most active in the nation, with long-term survival rates that exceed national benchmarks. 

♦ Newark Beth Israel received the American Heart Association’s Get with the Guidelines Gold Performance Achievement Award for Heart Failure 2009, 2010 and the Silver Performance Achievement Award for Coronary Artery Disease 2010.

♦ Newark Beth Israel also received the Acute Myocardial Infarction Action Registry-Get With The Guidelines Silver Performance Achievement Award from the American Heart Association (AHA) for its comprehensive data collection for the National Cardiovascular Data Registry that empowers health care provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines.

The Catheterization Lab received AHA’s Bronze Mission: Lifeline Award for implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients that effectively improves the survival of patients with a certain kind of heart attack known as ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

♦ Adult and pediatric cardiologists collaborated in August 2011 to perform New Jersey’s first transcatheter pulmonary valve implant that prevents the need for open heart surgery in patients who may have had many heart surgeries in their lifetime.
