Newark Duo Gets Hefty Prison Time for Violent Robberies

Men admit to robbing three gas stations in one day last year

Two Newark men who committed a string of violent gas-station robberies last year were each sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison Wednesday, the US Attorney’s Office announced.

Abdul Muhammad, 22, and Lamar Sanders, 24, held up Getty and Delta stations in Newark as well as a Lukoil in Elizabeth on March 8, 2011.

Muhammad previously admitted to firing a gun towards a victim at the Getty station and punching an attendant at the Lukoil in the course of the robberies. Sanders punched attendants in the face at the Newark stations and threatened the Lukoil attendant with a gun before turning the weapon over to Muhammad, who then shot the attendant. The attendant survived.

Muhammad and Sanders were sentenced to 228 and 207 months, respectively.
