NEWARK, NJ — Young residents of Georgia King Village in Newark will have access to 2,800 books at the property’s recently opened children’s library.

The children’s library, which will be operated by YMCA of Newark staff and students from Rutgers University and open three afternoons a week, is stocked with around 2,800 books that were donated by employees of L+M Development Partners and PSE&G, according to a joint news release.

This autumn, L+M plans to open an after-school program at property and is working with Newark Community Street Team to “bring safety and supportive services to the community,” the company stated.

“The Newark YMCA is very excited about partnering with L+M, PSE&G, and C+C to bring a vibrant, cozy, and shelf-filled library to Georgia King Village,” said Michael Bright, CEO of the Newark YMCA.

To date, the owners of the Georgia King Village have invested nearly $9 million in a first phase of rehabilitation work that will bring 60 vacant apartments back online, upgrade the heat and hot water system, insulate and repair facades and rooftops, install new lighting and increase security presence and camera coverage at the property, which has been plagued by “financial, operation and reputation challenges” for decades, developers said.

The second phase of work will address apartment interiors, common areas, lobbies, and outdoor areas and is anticipated to begin in 2018.

The expansive apartment complex will have two 18-story high-rises and 24 three-story garden-style walk-ups that total 422 dwelling units. Homes at Georgia King Village are available to individuals and families earning no more than 60 percent of area median income.
