Newark Housing Authority Opens ‘Section 8’ Waiting List: How To Apply

Looking for affordable housing in New Jersey's largest city? Here's how to apply for the Housing Authority's Section 8 waiting list.

NEWARK, NJ — Looking for affordable housing in New Jersey’s largest city? The Newark Housing Authority (NHA) opened its “Section 8” waiting list on Tuesday – which will remain open until “further notice.”

Selection is by lottery and based on available funding. One application is allowed per household, and applications remain active for 18 months. Apply online through RentCafé here: https://tinyurl.com/NHAPortal

The NHA’s local preferences include:

  • Head, Spouse, or Co-Head of Household is living and/or working in the City of Newark
  • Veterans, that are the Head, Spouse, or Co-Head of household
  • Seniors, 62 years or older, that are the Head, Spouse, or Co-Head of household

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must meet income limits (see below)
  • At least one household member must be a U.S. citizen or have eligible immigration status
  • Applicants must be at least 18-years-old
  • Background checks and prior housing history will be reviewed
