Newark HS Football Stars Show Guts On And Off The Field, Earn Award Nominations
Two talented high school football players from Newark have been nominated for a prestigious "Heart of a Giant Award."
NEWARK, NJ — Two more high school football players from Newark have been nominated for a prestigious “Heart of a Giant Award.”
Jahir Grandberry of Central High School and Zaiden McDonald of Malcolm X Shabazz High Schoolrecently earned a nomination for USA Football’s annual award, which is presented by the Hospital for Special Surgery and the New York Giants.
Now entering its 12th straight year, the award spotlights high school athletes in the Tri-State Area who demonstrate a “relentless work ethic and unmatched love for the game.” Players are nominated by their coaches for their commitment, teamwork, willpower, character and dedication – on and off the field.

Grandberry and McDonald were nominated as part of the Week 6 players. Voting will be open until Oct. 26. Fans can vote for them online here.

JAHIR GRANDBERRY - "Jahir Grandberry, a junior at Central High School, has shown remarkable perseverance both on and off the field. Despite undergoing two ACL surgeries, Jahir fought his way back onto the football field, where he continues to make an impact as a wide receiver and kicker. His resilience earned him the Comeback Player of the Year award, proving his determination to never let setbacks define him. In the classroom, Jahir maintains a strong academic record with a 3.2 GPA, excels in AP classes, and is a member of the National Math Honor Society. He has also served as both freshman and sophomore class president, highlighting his leadership beyond athletics. Jahir’s ability to balance academics, athletics, and leadership roles reflects his drive, discipline, and commitment to excellence. His story is one of resilience, leadership, and a relentless pursuit of success despite obstacles."
ZAIDEN MCDONALD - "Zaiden McDonald, a senior at Malcolm X Shabazz High School, exemplifies excellence both on the field and in the classroom. Ranked #4 in his class and committed to Stanford University, Zaiden’s academic drive matches his athletic talent as one of the top safeties in the state. A First Team All-Conference and All-State Top 50 selection, he leads with discipline, integrity, and a relentless work ethic. As team captain, he motivates teammates through his communication, consistency, and example of perseverance. Off the field, Zaiden gives back to his community by mentoring young athletes and volunteering at youth football camps, emphasizing teamwork and personal growth. Balancing academics, athletics, and leadership, Zaiden continues to prove that dedication and determination can open any door."

Here’s what comes next, organizers said:
“The nominee with the most votes will be named that week’s finalist. At the conclusion of the six-week process, there will be a total of 11 honorees (six weekly finalists and five honorable mentions) recognized for their work ethic and character. Each finalist will receive a $1,000 equipment grant for their high school football program, with the grand prize winner earning an additional $9,000 grant for their school and being honored on the field at a future Giants game this season. Selection of the grand prize winner will be based on video submissions explaining why they have the Heart of a Giant.”
