Newark Man Sentenced to Life in Slaying

Argument involving killer's girlfriend led to fatal shooting

A city man was sentenced in Hackensack Friday to life in prison for the 2007 murder of another Newark man, NorthJersey.com reported.

Fernando Carrero, 23, shot and killed 21-year-old Jose Hall Nov. 7, 2007 at the Lyndhurst home Carrero shared with his girlfriend, Keri Lynn Lowenstein. Hall was at the home visiting another man, Corey Hicks, who was Lowenstein’s ex-boyfriend and Hall’s best friend. Hicks lived at the home as well.

Carrero, who has a significant juvenile criminal history and who was described as being an abusive, jealous boyfriend, got into an argument with Hall after Carrero ordered him not to speak to Lowenstein. Carrero then pulled out a .357 Magnum and shot Hall in the stomach and head.

Carrero must serve at least 63 years before becoming eligible for parole.
