Three Newark Mayoral Candidates Participate in Town Hall Forum

The three declared candidates for mayor of Newark will be taking part in a town-hall forum Wednesday, Aug. 7 in the North Ward.

South Ward Councilman Ras Baraka and Shavar Jeffries, as associate professor at Seton Hall Law School and a former schools advisory board member, will take part. Acting Council President Anibal Ramos will also participate.

The event, which will include a Q and A with the public and the media, will be held at 6:30 pm at First Avenue School, 214 First Ave. There will also be a meet-and-greet with light refreshments afterwards.

The event is being hosted by Steve Sacco, a North Ward-based blogger and frequent contributor to Patch.

Also today, the municipal council will vote on a proposal to place a question on the November ballot asking voters to approve the creation of a taxpayer-supported open space and parks fund. For owners with property assessed at $200,000, the tax would cost about $20 a year and would raise more than a million dollars annually to maintain city parks and buy more land for open space preservation.

The council meeting starts at 12:30 pm at city hall.
