Newark Men Get Life for Home-Invasion Murder

Victim was with family when robbers burst in

Two city men were sentenced today to life in prison for the murder of an Irvington man during a home-invasion robbery in 2010, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office announced.

Derrick Miller, 24, and Arthur Thompson, 30, must each serve nearly 64 years before being eligible for parole under the state’s no early release guidelines.

On Jan. 18, 2010, Anthony Hunt, 47, was at his Brighton Terrace home with his family and a group of other people -- including a six-month-old baby -- when Miller and Thompson broke in wearing masks and brandishing guns. Hunt was shot three times.

Miller and Thompson were charged with murder, robbery, burglary, aggravated assault, attempted murder, felony murder, weapons charges and conspiracy to commit burglary and robbery.Thompson was found not guilty of the attempted murder and aggravated assault charges.

“There is one place on earth where you have a right to feel safe and that is your home,” said Assistant Prosecutor Michael Morris, who tried the case with Assistant Prosecutor Ahmad Rasool.

“These defendants invaded the safety of the victim’s home, murdering him and changing the lives of his survivors forever,” Morris added.
