Newark Nonprofit Empowers Young Women With ‘Financial Literacy’

NEWARK, NJ — A Newark nonprofit that gives youth mentoring services to young women in the city kicked off a series of free events on Thursday.

According to Girls Live, Love, Laugh, Inc. (GLLL), the workshops – dubbed “Royal InvestHER$ Club for Girls” – will include lessons about financial literacy and homeownership … plus a shopping trip for school uniforms.

Allison James-Frison, a survivor of homelessness and GLLL founder, is organizing the workshops, which will be led by M&T Bank SVP Layla Andrade and Weichert’s Lynda Lloyd.

GLLL will follow the girls’ savings journey for two years to track their progress, according to the nonprofit, which holds a wide range of outreach programs for girls ages 6 to 13.

First Time Homeownership - August 12 at 3:30 p.m. and August 13 at 3:30 p.m.: Leading the workshop will be Lynda Lloyd, a real estate agent for Weichert Realtors.

  • Day one location: Via Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86479692298. The girls will be allowed to log-on at 3:00 p.m. EST for prep time and questions.
  • Day two location: 46 Wainwright Avenue, Newark, N.J., 07112: Teens and parents will visit homes on the market to learn how to bid on a home and the difference between purchasing a single family vs. a multi-family property.

Financial Literacy Workshop – August 14 at 10:00 a.m.: Timed with National Financial Awareness Day, M&T Bank’s Senior Vice President Layla Andrade will present a financial literacy workshop, providing guidance on budgeting, banking and saving. During the event, participants will open a savings account, and will learn how to accumulate wealth over time.

School Uniform Shopping Excursion for 100 Newark Public School Families – August 18 at 7:00 p.m. EST: GLLL founder Allison James-Frison will provide 100 single parents and their daughters in the Newark Public School District with vouchers for one free uniform at Kids Place. The event is in sponsorship with the Victorian Foundation, United Healthcare Community Plan of New Jersey, and Assemblywoman Shanique Speight. Attendees must pre-register online, provide proof of address and wear a mask while shopping. The event is for girls in grades pre-K through seventh. To register, click here.
