Newark Opens Round-the-Clock Warming Shelter
Arctic conditions expected to remain through Thursday.

With bitter cold descending in the area Wednesday, the city of Newark has opened two temporary warming shelters, including a 24-hour facility.
The city will operate a warming center at the John F. Kennedy Recreation Center, 211 West Kinney St. This warming center will remain open for 24 hours, until the arctic conditions have subsided and temperatures are closer to seasonal levels, which are anticipated by Friday. An additional warming center is located at the Department of Child and Family Well-Being’s office facility at 394 University Ave. This warming center will operate daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. as needed. Both buildings are located in the Central Ward.
Single-digit temperatures and high winds are expected to continue to impact the region through Thursday. Winds are expected to gust as high as 31 mph.
“As a community we are working together to be safe and minimize the disruptions this arctic blast is causing. Residents should know that we are providing spaces where they can escape the cold and follow the recommended safety tips so they can protect themselves. I urge our residents during this state of emergency to check on their neighbors, particularly the elderly, the handicapped, and pets. It is also important to check your smoke and CO2 detectors, and watch out for signs of frostbite. Newark will emerge a stronger City if we take care of each other,” said Mayor Luis Quintana.Find out what's happening in Newarkfor free with the latest updates from Patch.
