Newark Opens Warming Centers
Two Central Ward sites will provide refuge from the Arctic cold

With single-digit temperatures and powerful wind chill expected to continue through at least Wednesday, the city of Newark has opened two warming public warming centers as temporary shelters for residents seeking to avoid the dangerous cold, the city announced Tuesday.
The centers will operate Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at two sites: the Department of Child and Family Well-Being offices at 110 William St. and the department’s facility at 394 University Ave.. Both buildings are located in the Central Ward. Residents who go to those buildings seeking shelter from the cold will be guided by staff to an area where they can get warm. The centers will remain open until the arctic conditions have subsided and temperatures are closer to seasonal levels, which are anticipated by Thursday.
City officials also remind residents to take reasonable precautions against the effects of cold, including frostbite, by dressing in layers and staying indoors as much as possible. In addition, city has a heating ordinance requiring landlords to maintain adequate temperatures through May 1. To report no heat or hot water in your apartment, call the Division of Code Enforcement at 973-733-6471 or 973-733-6481.
