Veteran officer walks in on Sunday afternoon supermarket holdup on way to security job.

A Newark police officer shot and killed an armed robbery suspect Sunday afternoon after the man flashed a gun at him, officials at the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

The veteran officer, who was not identified, was arriving for work as a security officer at 3 p.m. at the Twin City Supermarket, 611 Broadway, when he saw the armed robbery happening, acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said.

The officer identified himself and attempted to arrest the unidentified man, officials said. When the man flashed his gun, the officer fired one shot, striking the man, Murray said.
