Newark Real Estate Project Earns ‘New Good Neighbor Award’
NJBIA: "Once a neglected office and retail complex, Gateway in Newark has been renovated into an inclusive community hub."
NEWARK, NJ — A real estate project in Newark has earned a “New Good Neighbor Award” for helping to improve the quality of life in the area, a business advocacy group says.
The New Jersey Business and Industry Association (NJBIA) recently announced the 2023 winners of its annual awards, which “shine a light on firms, institutions and nonprofits that have contributed to the economic growth and stabilization of their respective neighborhoods by constructing and improving buildings (and infrastructure) that add value to their communities.”
Full summaries, and the criteria for how winners were selected, can be found in the July issue of New Jersey Business Magazine, found here.

This year’s winners included a project in Newark: Gateway 1, 2, and 4. Here's why it earned recognition this year, according to the NJBIA:
"Once a neglected office and retail complex, Gateway in Newark has been renovated into an inclusive community hub of business and cultural activity with reimagined public spaces, expanded retail, and dining options that support Newark’s commercial and economic growth. Owner Onyx Equities’ 1.6- million-square-foot complex embraces the streetscape. The revitalization, which required 160,531 manhours in various construction trades, includes an all-glass, street-level atrium across from the busiest rail station in the state. The design is inviting: The atrium, also known as the “jewel box,” offers transparency, welcomes, and leads visitors to Gateway’s Junction, which features local retail and dining options. Gateway continues to attract prominent tenants including the New Jersey Economic Development Authority; McCarter & English; the offices of U.S. Sens. Cory Booker and Robert Menendez; and WebMD."
NJBIA president and CEO Michele Siekerka said the complete list of 15 winners this year have created more than $346 million in capital improvements, more than 2,200 construction jobs and nearly 5,500 permanent jobs for their respective communities.

“Like past New Good Neighbor Award winners, these latest projects improve our quality of life,” Siekerka said. “They revitalize neighborhoods, provide valuable services and resources and bring communities together.”
